The Little Free Library project began in 2009 when Todd Bol built a small structure, a glorified birdhouse if you will, and filled it with books in honor of his late mother, a school teacher and avid reader. He placed the structure on his front lawn with a sign encouraging curious visitors to “Take a Book. Leave a Book.”
The spirit of the project, which aims to promote literacy and community, spread quickly and today there are an estimated 15,000 libraries nationally and even internationally (click here to see a map!). Right now there are very few registered Little Free Libraries in Arkansas. Let’s change that!
We’d love to bring at least one (but several if possible!) Little Free Library to the Jonesboro area. For more information about the Little Free Library Project visithttp://www.littlefreelibrary.org/
More about Forge Labs:
We are a group of makers who love to get together and make all kinds of things. We are working to build a grassroots movement, supported by a nonprofit organization called The Forge. You can read more about our mission and vision here: http://www.forgearkansas.com. This is just the first of many projects to come! Make sure you follow us on Facebook and on Kickstarter!
How you can help:
Your donations, no matter how large or small, will help fund the construction costs, the non-profit registration fee of the Free Little Library, the books and maintenance. We’ve set the fundraising goal for $150 (which will fund at least one library), but support does not have to stop there!
Funds above our goal will support a growing book collection and additional Free Little Libraries for the local community. Your suggestions for books and locations are welcomed. This will be a sharing hub for books that moved you, inspired you, made you laugh or made you cry. If you’ve read a book you loved and would like to share the experience, donate a copy!
While there are several community locations that would work, they will not be set in stone until We are confident the project will get off the ground. If you know an individual, family or organization that would be willing “host” sites for a library please let us know! Parks, cafes and coffee shops, gyms, etc. would all be great locations.
Your involvement in the project is essential to its success. Take a book. Leave a book. Return the book you took so someone else can enjoy it. Leave a note in a book. Post a picture of your LFL. Visit on the Facebook page. Let us know if a collection is running low or if the structure is being misused. This project promotes literacy, but what makes it so special is the shared spirit behind it. Connect with our community. So many thanks!
How Donations Work:
Make a pledge of any amount and when prompted, enter your billing information. Your card will not be charged unless the project reaches the $150 goal within the 30-day window we have set. Backers will also be thanked personally. Thank you!
